Atlético Madrid agree Jonathan David loan deal with Juventus

Jonathan David is set to leave Juventus for Atlético Madrid after the two clubs reached an agreement over a loan deal that could become permanent next summer.

Multiple reports in Italy state that Juventus have accepted Atlético’s proposal for the Canada international, with the agreement structured as an initial season-long loan carrying an option to buy worth approximately €25 million.

Atlético are also expected to cover more than half of David’s salary during the loan spell.

The transfer has not yet been officially announced by either club, but the negotiations have moved beyond the exploratory stage and an agreement between the clubs is now reported to be in place. 2

The deal brings a rapid conclusion to a Juventus spell that began only 14 months ago.

David joined the Turin club in July 2025 after leaving Lille, signing a five-year contract until June 2030. Juventus’ official financial documentation recorded no transfer fee for his registration, although the club incurred €12.5 million in ancillary costs associated with the signing. 3

His first Serie A campaign produced six goals and four assists from 35 appearances.

Those numbers represented a significant decline from the output that had established David as one of Ligue 1’s most consistent forwards. He left Lille after scoring 109 goals in 232 appearances across all competitions, including 87 in Ligue 1. 4

Juventus’ current squad planning has nevertheless moved in a different direction.

Luciano Spalletti has been pushing for another centre-forward with a stronger physical presence, and David’s departure has increasingly been viewed as necessary before the club can complete another attacking addition.

That makes the Atlético agreement part of a wider deadline-day chain rather than an isolated sale.

Juventus continue to assess alternatives including Nick Woltemade and Joshua Zirkzee, with David’s departure creating both a squad place and greater financial flexibility for another move. 5

For Atlético, the timing is equally significant.

The Spanish club have been dealing with continued uncertainty surrounding Julián Álvarez, who remains the subject of interest from Arsenal and Barcelona.

The Guardian reports that Atlético have secured David on loan as a potential replacement should Álvarez leave before the window closes. 6

David would give Atlético a forward with a different profile.

He is most effective when attacking spaces around and behind a defensive line rather than operating solely as a fixed reference point. His movement between central and inside channels was a major part of his success at Lille, where he consistently reached double figures in Ligue 1 across five consecutive seasons.

That mobility could offer Atlético flexibility whether David is used alongside another striker or as part of a more fluid front line.

The reported €25 million option also limits Atlético’s immediate financial exposure.

Rather than committing permanently to a player coming off an uneven first year in Serie A, the Spanish club can assess how effectively David adapts before making a longer-term decision.

Juventus, meanwhile, gain an exit route for a player whose position in the hierarchy had become increasingly uncertain.

The agreement therefore serves both clubs for different reasons.
