Aston Villa complete signing of Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma

Aston Villa have completed the permanent signing of Japan international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma, adding one of Serie A’s most highly regarded young goalkeepers to Unai Emery’s squad.

The 23-year-old arrives at Villa Park after two seasons in Italy, having established himself as Parma’s first-choice goalkeeper and a regular for the Japan national team. Neither club disclosed the transfer fee in their official announcements, although the deal has been widely reported to be worth around £30 million including add-ons.

Suzuki initially joined Parma from Belgian side Sint-Truiden and quickly became an important part of the Italian club’s return to and consolidation in Serie A. His performances attracted interest from several clubs across Europe, with his physical presence, distribution and ability to operate confidently away from his goal making him an increasingly prominent prospect.

He made 57 Serie A appearances during his time with Parma and further strengthened his international profile by starting all four of Japan’s matches at the 2026 World Cup.

Villa’s decision to invest significantly in Suzuki gives Emery another high-level option in goal as the club continue reshaping their squad ahead of the new Premier League season. Emiliano Martínez has remained the subject of transfer speculation during the summer, but Suzuki’s arrival should not automatically be interpreted as confirmation that the Argentina international will leave Villa Park.

Instead, the signing provides Villa with immediate competition as well as a longer-term option in a position that has been central to their recent success. At 23, Suzuki already possesses substantial top-flight and international experience while retaining considerable scope for further development.

His arrival also continues an active period of recruitment for Aston Villa, who have moved to strengthen several areas of the squad before the campaign begins.

For Parma, the transfer represents a significant return on a player whose reputation rose rapidly during his time in Italy. For Suzuki, the move brings a first opportunity in the Premier League and another step in a career that has accelerated considerably over the past two seasons.
