Aston Villa agree £30m Taylor Harwood-Bellis deal with Southampton

Aston Villa have reached an agreement in principle with Southampton to sign Taylor Harwood-Bellis, moving to reinforce Unai Emery’s defence after the sale of Ezri Konsa to Arsenal.

The deal is not yet official, but Sky Sports reports that Villa have agreed a £30m package with Southampton for the 24-year-old centre-back. The structure is understood to include a £25m guaranteed fee plus £5m in add-ons, with final details still being sorted between the clubs.

That leaves the transfer advanced rather than complete. Harwood-Bellis has not yet been announced as a Villa player, and the remaining formalities still have to be finished before the move can be treated as confirmed.

For Villa, the timing is central to the story. Konsa’s move to Arsenal left a clear gap in Emery’s defensive group, and Harwood-Bellis would arrive as a Premier League-ready replacement rather than a longer-term project. He also offers a homegrown profile, leadership experience and familiarity with English football.

Harwood-Bellis has made 134 appearances for Southampton since first joining from Manchester City, according to Sky Sports, and has one goal in his only senior England appearance. His Southampton move became permanent in 2024 after he helped the club win promotion, signing a four-year contract at St Mary’s following a successful loan spell.

The proposed fee reflects both Villa’s need and Southampton’s negotiating position. Harwood-Bellis had become one of the Championship club’s most important assets, and Southampton had already resisted earlier interest before Villa moved closer to the valuation required.

For Emery, the attraction is a defender who can step into a high-demand environment without needing a major adaptation period to English football. Villa’s summer has already involved significant attacking and defensive change, so adding a centre-back with domestic experience reduces some of the risk attached to another late-window move.

The next step is completion. Until the final details, medical process and club announcements are finished, Harwood-Bellis’ move should remain classified as an agreement in principle rather than an official transfer.
