Arsenal sweep Manchester City aside to win Community Shield

Arsenal claimed the Community Shield with a commanding 3-0 victory over Manchester City in Cardiff, delivering an emphatic performance in the first major fixture of the new English season.

Riccardo Calafiori gave Arsenal a remarkable start, scoring after only 23 seconds at the Principality Stadium. Myles Lewis-Skelly released the Italian defender into the penalty area and Calafiori finished past Gianluigi Donnarumma to immediately put City under pressure.

Arsenal doubled their advantage before half-time through Kai Havertz. Christos Tzolis created the opportunity, supplying the first of two assists on an impressive competitive debut for his new club.

Tzolis was involved again shortly after the interval as Arsenal effectively settled the contest. The Greece international provided for Martin Ødegaard, who made it 3-0 three minutes into the second half and left City facing a difficult route back into the match.

The two assists represented an immediate contribution from one of Arsenal’s summer additions and added another attacking option to a side beginning the season with significant expectations.

City were unable to produce a meaningful response despite having Erling Haaland and Phil Foden among their attacking options. David Raya preserved Arsenal’s clean sheet as Mikel Arteta’s side controlled their advantage and avoided giving City a way back into the game.

The defeat made for a difficult competitive start for Enzo Maresca, who was taking charge of Manchester City for the first time following his appointment as Pep Guardiola’s successor. City now have limited time to address the issues exposed in Cardiff before the Premier League campaign begins.

For Arsenal, the afternoon provided far more than an early-season trophy. Calafiori’s extraordinary opening goal established the tone, Havertz and Ødegaard converted Arsenal’s control into a decisive scoreline, and Tzolis offered an encouraging first indication of what he can add to Arteta’s attack.

A 3-0 victory over one of their principal domestic rivals gives Arsenal the Community Shield and an early statement ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
