Alexander Isak set for hostile Newcastle return with Liverpool

Alexander Isak is set for an emotionally charged return to St James’ Park on Sunday as the Liverpool striker prepares to face Newcastle United for the first time since his controversial £125 million departure.

The Sweden international left Newcastle for Liverpool last summer following a prolonged transfer dispute that strained his relationship with the club and sections of the fanbase.

Isak had been one of Newcastle’s most important players before his exit, scoring 54 goals in 86 Premier League appearances and playing a decisive role in their 2025 Carabao Cup triumph.

His departure, however, came after a turbulent final period on Tyneside. Isak pushed for a move away and spent part of pre-season training separately before eventually completing his switch to Anfield.

Sunday’s Premier League meeting will therefore carry added significance, with the striker expected to receive a hostile reception from the home crowd on his first appearance back at St James’ Park.

Isak’s first season at Liverpool did not reach the same heights as his best period with Newcastle, but he enters the new campaign fit and is expected to play a prominent role under Andoni Iraola.

Liverpool travel to the north-east looking to make a strong start after finishing fifth last season, while Newcastle begin a new era under Matthias Jaissle following Eddie Howe’s departure.

The reunion places Isak at the centre of one of the standout fixtures of the Premier League’s opening weekend, with the focus likely to extend well beyond the result itself.
